We are happy to introduce to you Skys a Blue, aka Kyla Nicole. Skys a Blue is an independent singer & songwriter from Johannesburg, South Africa. As she describes herself, she is reimagining the alternative R&B universe.
Music influenced her life since early beginnings, and that shows across her work. You can listen to her latest release, “Feelings” on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes and Deezer. But before you do, you might want to get to know her a little bit more. Read below our interview with her, and discover her biggest achievements and dreams about her future career.
Q: What is your original hometown & your current residency place?
A: Born and raised in Jhb, South Africa.
Q: Tell us in a short way about your musical background & early influences?
A: Safe to say my earliest influence came from my father, he was singing to me while I was still in the womb. So doesn’t get much earlier than that. He was a Dj back in the day And my mom was a Spanish Dancer, so the two of them quite literally drilled all things music into my head and it has been a very strong constant in my life till now. From the age of 5, When other families would sit around a table and have dinner every night my father would put on the hi-fi and teach my brothers and I each to sing while playing all his favourites. A little like the Jackson 5 we had a very strong Motown influence and that’s where my love for music grew.
Q: What is your favorite digital service to discover fresh new music?
A: Like to keep it simple, I’d say Youtube.
Q: What is the very first musical product you acquired or discovered?
A: I was around 6 years old when I had a blue piano that came with the song (Wake me up before you go go – Wham) It went everywhere with me on repeat, my poor family!
Q: Which of your own projects is exciting you the most at the moment?
A: I think each song I write brings a level of excitement, Ive spent many years discovering who I am as an artist and working at my craft so its always exciting to create and put your heart on your sleeve for all to hear and interpret in their own way.
Q: Which are your proudest musical achievements and a genuine milestone in your career?
A: What comes to mind would be having a two number-one songs on radio, It’s never easy as an independent artist but I’ve learnt to appreciate even the smallest achievements.
Q: What is your dream gig and performance location today?
A: Hmm, Dream performance. Tiny Desk, Colors Channel! Either would be amazing. A real dream for me would be getting to sit in a studio and create alongside the OG’s in the game the creatives I grew up listening to. The artists that inspired me to write and sing in the first place.
